C𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 O𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫

Sometimes, when you decide to leave your job for a better one, your boss might try to make you stay by offering more money or better benefits. This is called a 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫. It may seem like a good deal, but before you accept, take a moment to think. 


Recently, we offered a job to a talented software engineer who had been working for over two years at his current company. His pay wasn’t great compared to others in the industry, so we made him a much better offer with higher salary aligning with market rate and better benefits. He was very excited and said yes, and confirmed the start date also.


But just before joining us, he changed his mind. His current boss had given him a counter offer with more money to stay. This confused us. Why would he stay at a company that hadn’t been paying him fairly and had a poor work culture?


𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞?

At first, a counter offer may look like a great deal because of,


🔴 More money – Who doesn’t want a raise?

🔴 Familiarity – You already know the job and the people. Starting somewhere new can feel scary.

🔴 Comfort – It feels easier to stay where things are familiar than to take a risk on something new.


But here’s the thing. your boss might not actually care about you. They might just want to keep you because it’s cheaper than hiring someone new.


𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞? 


👉 It saves their money because hiring and training someone new costs time and money. Giving you a raise is easier.

👉 You know the job and new employee will take time to learn everything.

👉 You’re important to them because losing you could hurt the company.


Even if they want you to stay, it’s often more about their benefit than yours.


𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫?


🚨 You weren’t valued before. If they truly appreciated you, they would have given you a raise earlier, not just when you decided to leave.

🚨 No career growth because more money doesn’t mean better opportunities for learning, promotion, or skill development.

🚨 Trust issues because your boss might start seeing you as disloyal, which could change how they treat you.

🚨 The same problems will remain. If the company’s culture, management, or recognition is bad, that won’t change just because they gave you a raise.

🚨 You might miss a better opportunity. The new job might offer more growth, learning, and a better future. Staying could mean missing out.

Before you accept, ask yourself 🤔 





❓ Why did I want to leave in the first place?

❓ Was it just about money, or did I want career growth and a better work environment?

❓ Will a counter offer fix the real problems?


If you were excited about your new job, go for it! You’ll probably be happier and have better opportunities.
